What is a telomere?
At both ends of every DNA strand in a human cell is a telomere. Telomeres prevent chromosomes from becoming frayed, fusing into rings, or binding with other DNA. Think: the protective cap that protects shoelaces from unraveling.)
What causes telomere shortening?As part of your body’s normal aging process, each time a cell divides, the telomeres in your DNA get shorter. Add oxidative stress to the mix and telomeres shorten even more rapidly. Oxidative stress is the effect of destructive reactions in your body’s cells caused by too many free radicals or atoms/molecules that have unpaired electrons. In their search for an electron to make them whole, they destroy other cells. Free radicals come from environmental toxins such as pollution, chemicals, drugs and radiation, and even naturally occur in your own body when you exercise. Antioxidants fight free radicals and stem the causes of oxidative stress, but a key combination is needed to reduce the effects of oxidative stress on your telomeres.
What happens when telomeres get short?
In a few words: Bad things happen when telomeres get short. Your body’s cells are unable to divide (or reproduce) and simply die. Eventually, this instability leads to tissue breakdown potentially leading to premature aging.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH?
For centuries, man has searched far and wide for the solution to the problem of aging. Famous explorers traveled the globe, hoping for fame and fortune—and longer life—by discovering the fountain of youth. People turn to harsh treatments like chemical peels and Botox injections just to take a few years off their appearance.
But none of these solutions tackle the real problem: the fact that every day our bodies are slowly aging and there is seemingly nothing that can be done about it.
SCIENCE BEHIND AGING
So why exactly do our bodies age? In the simplest terms, we age because our cells age. Almost everything in your body is made up of cells. As those cells age, so do their corresponding parts. As the cells in your skin age, for example, you’re more prone to develop wrinkles, age spots and more. But your body’s cells aren’t the only thing that causes you to age. Your body’s cells are constantly dividing, and when they do, your telomeres get shorter.
WHAT ARE TELOMERES?
To understand telomeres and how they affect aging, you have to get down to the subcellular level. Each of your cells contain millions of DNA molecules, coiled up like a spring. At the ends of the springs are long, repetitive sequences of DNA called telomeres. When a cell divides, the DNA material in the chromosomes is copied through a process called DNA replication. But, when a chromosome is replicated, some sections at the end of the chromosome are unable to replicate. That means that since telomeres are at the end of chromosomes each time your cells divide you lose some telomeres. But what does that mean for aging? As your telomeres get shorter, you start to notice the general signs of aging—loss of muscle strength, poor eyesight, memory problems and many others. You are born with about 10,000 DNA bases that make up your telomeres. As your cells divide, you lose those bases as you age.
CAN ANYTHING BE DONE ABOUT AGING?
For years, respected telomere scientist William H. Andrews, Ph.D. has studied the science behind telomeres and aging. What he has discovered in the past several years is that, while we can’t control our cells dividing, there are some things we can do to slow down the aging process. We’ve known for decades that getting more exercise, decreasing the toxins around us, and reducing stress can have an impact on how our bodies age. But research actually shows that our bodies contain an enzyme, called telomerase that helps lengthen telomeres, effectively slowing down the aging cycle. Telomerase acts like an assembly line, lengthening telomeres as they shorten in our reproductive cells. Research has also shown that telomerase exists in all of our cells but is repressed. The key to the anti-aging effect is to unlock this telomerase in our cells.
So, armed with the latest science, how can you win the battle against aging? The first step is to do everything you can to combat those factors known to contribute to premature aging by improving your nutrition, managing your weight, and ridding your body of toxins.
